Mandatory Vaccination Policy

At North York General (NYGH), we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure the safest environment for patients, visitors and every person working and volunteering at our organization.

Yesterday we announced that COVID-19 vaccination will be mandatory for all NYGH staff, physicians, contractors, volunteers and students/learners.  NYGH joined 14 Central Region Hospitals to introduce a coordinated approach to mandatory vaccination and many other hospitals are going in this direction.

In compliance with Ontario’s Directive 6, all NYGH staff and physicians who are partially vaccinated or unvaccinated will begin to undertake regular COVID-19 rapid antigen testing starting on September 8

We are supporting all people who work at NYGH to be vaccinated as soon as possible.  If you are a staff member or physician at NYGH and you have not been vaccinated and/or not provided proof of vaccination or proof of a medical or Human Rights Code exemption, please use this QR code on the right to book your vaccination appointment and access the simple steps to submit your vaccination documents safely and securely to our Occupational Health Department.

On October 29, all staff, physicians, volunteers, learners and contractors must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of full vaccination.  Staff members who have not submitted proof by October 29 of having two doses and do not have a valid exemption will be subject to progressive discipline and immediately placed on an unpaid leave of absence, and subject to termination of employment thereafter. Credentialed Physicians who have not submitted proof of having two doses by October 29 and do not have a valid exemption will have their privileges reviewed in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act.

With COVID-19 on the rise driven by the contagious Delta variant and clear evidence that the vast majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are among unvaccinated people, NYGH is doing all we can to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks in our hospital and the risk of having to shut down vital services again

As a hospital we make decisions based on the best scientific evidence. The science is clear that vaccination is safe, highly effective and it saves lives.

Some North York neighbourhoods have lower vaccination rates than the City of Toronto average and we serve patients who are immunocompromised and at higher risk of severe illness.  Mandatory vaccination is the right thing to do for our patients, NYGH’s people and the community we serve.
