NYGH expands virtual care

In collaboration with the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN), North York General Hospital (NYGH) has expanded our ability to offer telemedicine visits for a select number of clinics in the Maternal, Newborn and Paediatric Care Program.

Patients will now have access to virtual care options, via telemedicine, for the Mother and Baby Follow-up Clinic, the Paediatric Complex Care Clinic and the Paediatric Feeding Clinic.

Bringing together health care and digital technology, NYGH believes that virtual care will provide increasing options for our patients and families, thus enabling them to access their care providers from the comfort of their own homes or from other community health care settings.

NYGH anticipates that virtual care will play an increasing role in the way that our health care providers interact with patients. As the population of the Greater Toronto Area continues to grow, virtual care will support NYGH to meet the needs of our surrounding community and further improve access for our patients residing outside of the hospital's immediate geographic region. Covered by OHIP, telemedicine visits are available at no cost to patients and families.

Leveraging the technology of many smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers, telemedicine mirrors the interaction of an in-person clinical visit. Using the camera and microphone of a patient's preferred, internet-enabled device, telemedicine allows patients to see and speak with their NYGH care provider in real-time. Conducted via OTN's secure network, OTN ensures the privacy and confidentiality of all telemedicine visits. To learn more about the process of connecting with your health care provider using OTN, please review the following guide on the myvirtualhealth.ca website, which overviews the four simple steps necessary to connect.

As the expansion of telemedicine proceeds throughout the organization, NYGH looks forward to continuing to evolve in the way in which we deliver high-quality, safe and accessible care to our patients and families.
