Four new Governors Join the NYGH Board

Toronto (June 18, 2024) – North York General Hospital (NYGH) is pleased to announce that Mitch Frazer has been elected Chair of the Board of Governors.

“It is a great honour to serve our growing communities as Chair of the North York General Hospital Board of Governors,” said Mitch Frazer, new Chair of the NYGH Board of Governors. “NYGH is embarking on its most ambitious expansion ever. We will build one of Ontario’s largest long-term care homes and, together with our partners, reimagine seniors’ care.  In the coming years, through a new state-of-the-art acute care tower and campus of care, NYGH will continue to redefine the standard of excellence as a community academic hospital serving all communities throughout life.”

Mitch joined the NYGH Board of Governors in 2018 and most recently served as the Vice Chair of the Board of Governors. He replaces outgoing Chair Bert Clark after a successful three-year term. Clark will continue to bring his outstanding leadership to the organization as a member of the North York General Foundation Board.

A leading Canadian lawyer, governance expert, educator and community-builder, Mitch is currently Managing Partner of the Toronto Office of Mintz, a full-service North American law firm, with a practice focused on pension, benefits and employment law. Prior to Mintz, he served as the chair of the Pensions and Employment Practice of an international law firm based in Toronto. In addition to being a NYGH Governor, Frazer’s volunteer roles include serving as the Chancellor of Ontario Tech University, a member and former Chair of the TFS (Toronto French School) Board of Directors, Chair of the Western Law Advisory Council, the immediate past Chair of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Board of Governors and a former member of the Ontario Science Centre Board of Trustees.  His community work includes co-founding the National Institute on Ageing at Toronto Metropolitan University and serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Mitch is the recipient of numerous awards for his professional and volunteer achievements. He was named one of the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer magazine and was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Ontario Bar Association’s Award of Excellence in Pension and Benefits Law and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Toronto Metropolitan University. He has also been admitted to the Order of Ontario.

Also at the NYGH Annual General Meeting on June 17, four new Governors were elected who bring extensive leadership experience and expertise to the organization and health system

  • Jonathan Mackey – Jon has served as a community member on the NYGH Board of Governors’ Governance Committee since 2016.  He founded the leadership advisory firm, Mackey & Company, which specializes in working with investors, founders, and private equity to achieve their strategic goals through business transformation.
  • Gillian Akai is Chief Administrative Officer, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Postmedia Network Inc.
  • Kristina Fanjoy is the Senior Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, CPP Investments
  • George Mavroudis is President and Chief Executive Officer, Guardian Capital Group Limited
