Frequently Asked Questions

    Volunteer today

What is the minimum commitment I have to make to the Volunteer Program at NYGH?

All volunteers must commit to volunteer for a minimum of one year. Your volunteer shift will be four hours once a week and will always be on the same day, at the same time, in the same assigned area.

How old do I have to be to volunteer at NYGH?

You must be 16 years of age or older to apply to our Volunteer Program. Please note that we have very limited volunteer roles available evenings or weekends, making it challenging to accommodate high school students during the academic year. Students interested in volunteering may want to explore the Co-operative Education Program.

Do you offer a Student Volunteer Program?

No, we do not offer a Student Program at NYGH. Students who are accepted into the Volunteer Program are required to commit to a minimum of one year. Your volunteer shift will be four hours once a week and will always be on the same day, at the same time, in the same assigned area.

NYGH does offer Co-operative Education placements to secondary school students from the Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board and the Toronto Catholic School Board. We offer placements during the fall, winter and summer semesters. If you are interested in a Cooperative Education placement at NYGH, please contact your school's Cooperative Education teacher.

Please note that due to the structure of our programs and the extensive screening required, we are unable to accommodate the Ministry of Education's 40-hour Community Service requirement.

Do you provide volunteers with a reference?

We are happy to provide our volunteers with a reference after their minimum one-year commitment has been completed. Reference requests should be made in writing to your Volunteer Coordinator.

Once I have been accepted into the Volunteer Program, what are the next steps?

Once you have been accepted into the Volunteer Program:

    • You will be placed in a specific volunteer role; your Volunteer Coordinator will work with you to ensure a mutual match.
    • You will complete NYGH's mandatory Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocol. This includes documentation of current immunizations, in addition to providing documentation of a completed two-step TB test.
    • At the request of the Volunteer Services Department, you will submit a Vulnerable Sector Check. This step is required for some, but not all volunteer positions at NYGH.
    • Provide a $20 uniform /photo identification badge deposit.
    • Attend a two-hour volunteer orientation session
    • Attend additional specific training and orientation for your specific volunteer role

I am medically trained and I wish to use my skills in order to gain further experience. Can I do this as a volunteer at NYGH?

We do not offer placements that enable you to practice your professionally acquired skills. What this means is, although you have been medically trained as a nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, pharmacists, lab technician etc., you may not practise those skills as a volunteer. Please see the Information for Internationally Trained Professionals.

Can volunteers apply for paid employment positions at NYGH?

Yes. Anyone can apply for paid employment positions by visiting the Careers section of our website. Please be advised that volunteering at NYGH does not guarantee that you will be offered an interview/paid position.
