Medicine Program

The Medicine Program covers a wide range of services with a special focus on the care of the elderly.

  • 200 beds are allocated to the Medicine Program, representing 50% of the beds at the hospital
  • 65% of all patients admitted via the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency flow into the Medicine Program

Our inpatient units provide expert care 24 hours a day: 

  • Neurology and Stroke
  • Cardiology
  • General Internal Medicine
  • Respiratory and Gastrointestinal
  • Progressive Care for transition to an alternate level of care facility
  • Critical Care Unit
  • Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE)

Clinics support the key areas of inpatient work:

  • Heart Function Clinic/Pacemaker Clinic
  • Supportive Cardiology Clinic
  • Diabetes Education Centre
  • Stroke Prevention Clinic
  • Medical Surgical Clinic
  • Specialized geriatric clinics 

An interprofessional team provides both inpatient and outpatient services. The team may include registered nurses, registered practical nurses, patient care assistants, clinical nurse educators, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists, clinical dietitians, pharmacists, physicians and clerical support staff.

The Medicine Program works closely with the hospital’s Cancer Care Program to support cancer and end of life care.
