Family Advisory Committee — To provide us with the patient and family's perspective on what we can do to enhance the patient's stay.

Pain policy — To reduce and/or eliminate any pain in the treatment.

Child life specialist — To help ease some of the anxieties children and teenagers face in hospital, using distraction therapy and medical play

Grace’s Place (surgical waiting room) — Offers children and their parents a comfortable area to spend time together before surgery. The room is filled with toys and games to help distract children from the surgery ahead and reduce their anxiety.

Overnight accommodation for parents — Parents are always welcome to sleep overnight in their child’s room on the Child & Teen Unit.

Playroom — A supervised playroom on the unit equipped by Ronald MacDonald House Charities and Starlight Foundation offers an array of toys, craft supplies and videos.

Teen hangout — An area dedicated to the adolescents; this room provides an area for teens to participate in crafts, watch movies, play with the Wii or use the computers.

Patient room activities — Each patient room in the Child and Teen Unit is equipped with a TV and VCR/Nintendo unit. The Rogers Jolly Trolley is equipped with a 27-inch flat screen TV, a DVD/VHS player, a Nintendo Game Cube and three full drawers of DVDs and Game Cube games. Our child life specialist and volunteers ensure children in isolation have access to toys, books and crafts appropriate to their age.

Patient and parent satisfaction survey — Patients and families are asked to fill out a satisfaction survey just before going home. The survey results give the team valuable insight into our strengths as well as areas where we need to improve to ensure a positive patient and family experience.
