Infant Hearing Screening Program

North York General Hospital’s Infant Hearing Screening Program helps identify newborns with hearing loss.

Nurses with specialized training from the Infant Hearing Screening Program offer screening for newborn infants before they go home. The screening involves placing a small earphone in the baby's ear. Soft sounds are played through the earphone and the ear's response is measured and recorded.

Infants whose hearing loss is identified early will be able to get the services they need to develop language and hearing skills much earlier than in the past.
