President and CEO Dr. Tim Rutledge accepts new position

Dr. Tim Rutledge

President and CEO Dr. Tim Rutledge has informed the Board of Governors that he has accepted the position of President and CEO at the newly formed health network comprised of Providence Health Care, St. Joseph's Health Centre and St. Michael's Hospital. Tim will continue in his role at North York General Hospital (NYGH) until mid-March.

Tim took on the President and CEO role at NYGH in 2010 after spending almost 15 years in leadership roles within our organization, including Chief of our Emergency Department from 1996 to 2007, and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee from 2002 to 2004.

Over the past eight years, he has strengthened our commitment to Patient- and Family-Centred Care through the establishment of the Patient and Family Advisory Committee, which brings the patient voice to every key initiative NYGH undertakes.

His dedication to continuous improvements in quality is evident in our industry-leading information systems, as well as the enthusiasm for quality initiatives demonstrated by frontline staff, supported by expert resources.

The advancement of education and research has been a central part of our strategy, and a special focus for Tim. As an early proponent of interprofessional education, Tim has helped establish NYGH as a leader in preparing health professionals and health care leaders. Our research program has grown to include internationally recognized research chairs and steadily increasing research activity in areas that directly impact the way patients receive care.

Tim has helped shape NYGH's culture of learning and collaboration, an essential building block that has nurtured high functioning, dedicated teams across the organization.

The awards that NYGH has enjoyed over the past eight years are too numerous to detail, but include province-leading staff and physician engagement scores, recognition for achievements in quality initiatives and for high performance in every area of health care delivery, setting of provincial benchmarks in access and flow, and successive Accreditation Canada accreditations with exemplary standing. All of this reflects the efforts of an amazing group of individuals brought together through effective leadership.

The NYGH Board of Governors and Senior Leadership Team wish Tim all the very best in his new role. His new position will provide a tremendous opportunity to lead the development of a newly evolving health care network, bringing together a full range of health care services in an integrated environment.

Plans to put in place interim leadership and initiate a recruitment process for a new North York General CEO are underway. Our hospital is in great shape with a solid Senior Leadership Team, a well-developed Strategic Plan, a well-thought-out succession process in place, years of balanced budgets, and an atmosphere of collegiality second to none in the health care world. We are confident that we will have many qualified applicants to succeed Tim, who will embrace our platform and continue to build our future.

I am incredibly proud of our exceptional staff, physicians and volunteers and know that NYGH will continue to thrive during this transition.
