The General site is North York General Hospital's largest site. It is located at 4001 Leslie Street (Leslie and Sheppard) and offers a full range of services including inpatient acute care services and a 24-hour full service emergency.
Below are key clinical programs and services at the General site. Please note that this list is not intented to be a comprehensive list of every service offered at the General site.
Clinical programs and departments
The program is one of the largest in the Greater Toronto Area and provides treatment for many types of cancers, including breast, colon, prostate, gynecological and urinary. Services include the following facilities: The BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre

Child and Teen
The hospital cares for over 2,000 children every year and offers a wide range of medical and mental health services for newborns to 18 years. Clinics and services for children and teens include: Antenatal Consultation Clinic; Child and Teen Inpatient Unit; Infant Hearing Screening Program; Mental Health Program; Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic; Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Paediatric Complex Care Clinic; Paediatric Consultation Clinic; Paediatric Subspecialty Clinics; and paediatric surgery. Some services like the Adolescent Eating Disorders Program and Diabetes Service are located at the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre.

The hospital offers a wide variety of medical imaging and cardio-respiratory services at its General and Branson sites. Medical Imaging Services at the General site include: general radiology; fluoroscopy; ultrasound; interventional radiology; nuclear medicine; nuclear cardiology;computed tomography (CT); magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); mammography in the BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre part of the Karen, Heather, and Lynn Steinberg Breast Services – Ontario Breast Screening Program.
Cardio-respiratory and neurology services include: nuclear cardiology; Holter monitoring; ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM); graded exercise stress test; echocardiography; and pulmonary function test.

Emergency and Urgent Care
The Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency at the General site is a full service emergency — one of the busiest in Canada. Spacious and technically advanced, it is the hospital's "front door" — most of our patients who are admitted into the hospital come in through the emergency department. (NYGH also has a "walk-in" Urgent Care Centre at the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre designed to manage urgent illnesses or injuries that are not life threatening.)

The Genetics Program is one of Ontario's largest, full service regional genetics centres. It offers assessment diagnosis and counselling for patients as well as laboratory testing. North York General was the first hospital in North America to incorporate integrated prenatal screening into routine care of pregnant women. Services are offered for: prenatal, general clinical genetics, cancer genetics and Huntington Disease.

Family and Community Medicine
North York General has one of the largest complements of family physicians in a Canadian hospital, with 212 active physicians in 2015–2016. They provide care from their private practices in north central Toronto and southern York Region.

The department analyzes approximately 2 million tests annually at its full service laboratory at the General site and point of care model testing laboratory within the Urgent Care Centre at the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre. It serves patients from all clinics within the hospital.
Maternal Newborn Care
The Maternal Newborn Program at our General site provides care throughout a woman's pregnancy from prenatal screening through labour and birth, to the postpartum experience. The hospital's obstetrical centre is one of the largest single site centres in Ontario and each year celebrates the birth of over 5,650 babies.

Medicine and Elder Care
The Medicine and Elder Care Program covers a wide range of services with a special focus on the care of the elderly. Inpatient units provide care in:
- Neurology and stroke
- General internal medicine
- Respiratory and gastrointestinal
- Progressive care for transition to an alternate level of care facility
- Critical care
- Acute care of the elderly
Clinics support the key areas of inpatient work: Heart Function Clinic/Pacemaker Clinic; Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic; Stroke Prevention Clinic; Medical Surgical Clinic. Diabetes services are located at the Branson Ambulatory Care Clinic. Many of our geriatric clinics are located at the Seniors' Health Centre.

The hospital is recognized for offering a wide range of mental health services for individuals of all ages. Services at the General site include: inpatient care – adult, geriatric, child and adolescent; Partial Hospitalization Program; outpatient services; Geriatric Psychiatry Program; child and adolescent mental health — inpatient and day hospital; Women's Clinic; and consultation liaison service to our medical/surgical/oncology/paediatric programs. Mental health services are also offered at the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre.

The department meets the medication needs of patients admitted to the hospital and also operates two outpatient pharmacies (drug stores) at the General site and Branson Ambulatory Care Centre. Patient medication assessments and education sessions are also offered.

The comprehensive range of surgical services offered includes: cancer surgery, orthopaedic, paediatric, cataract, glaucoma and ocular oncology surgery, as well as expertise in otolaryngology, head and neck (ear, nose and throat), urology, plastic surgery, oral, maxillofacial, general, vascular and thoracic surgery.
