Awards presented at Medical Staff Association holiday party
December 16, 2013

The Medical Staff Association held their Annual Holiday Party on Monday, December 9 at the Donalda Club. Some highlights of the evening were the award presentations. The Dr. Joel Weinstein Family & Community Medicine Resident Education Scholarship was awarded to Dr. Mark Robinson. Dr. Goran Eryavec and Jerwin Sauco, RPN, were the recipients of the Dr. Morris Siu-Chong Memorial Award.

The launch of the North York General Hospital Exploration Fund marks a new and exciting phase in research and innovation at our Hospital. Designed to build on our Academic Foundation, the fund will support staff and physicians as they create and study new and better ways to meet the growing needs of our community. Congratulations to Dr. Farah Ahmad and Dr. Alan Fung as well as Dr. Hannah Wong and Mark Fam.

Environmental Services recognized for dramatic reduction in infection rates
December 10, 2013

On Monday, December 2, the Infection Prevention and Control department (IPAC) hosted a recognition event to celebrate the successes and dedication of North York General's Environmental Services team. More specifically, the event recognized the dramatic reduction in Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) rates. The rate of C. difficile, which is known to have a major environmental component to transmission, has declined more than 30% each of the past two years!

NYGH wins 9 marketing and communications awards
November 13, 2013

Congratulations to our Corporate Communications and Public Affairs (CCPA) team who won in 9 categories of the 2013 MarCom Awards.
MarCom Awards is a creative competition for any individual or company involved in the concept, writing and design of print, visual, audio and web materials and programs. Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, PR firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers.

On October 17, North York General (NYGH) was selected as the winner of Crothall Healthcare's National Account of the Year for Canada. NYGH participated in a North American recognition program, Be-A-Star, that recognizes associates and teams for business excellence within Compass Group.

Desiree-Ann Prillo Awarded RPNAO Excellence in Care of Older Ontarian Award

Desiree-Ann Prillo, 5 South East Registered Practical Nurse (RPN),accepted the RPNAO Excellence in Care of Older Ontarian Award at the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario's 55th Annual General Meeting and Conference on October 3-4. This award celebrates the dedication of an RPN who provides exceptional care to our beloved older adults in a manner that is respectful, compassionate, and professional and exemplifies nursing excellence.

Karyn Popovich receives Accreditation Canada Quality Ambassador Award for Client Focus

Dr. David Kaplan receives 2013 Innovation Award

Dr. David Kaplan, a family physician in NYGH's Department of Family & Community Medicine and the Primary Care Physician Lead for the Central Local Health Integration Network,hasreceivedthe 2013 Innovation Awardfrom the Society of Graduates at the University of Toronto's Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME).
 
This award honours a graduate of the IHPME program who has made a significant contribution to the fields of health policy, health management and/or health evaluation, to celebrate their example and inspire others.

Congratulations to our new Exploration Fund recipients!

The North York General Hospital Exploration Fund marks a new and exciting phase in research and innovation at our Hospital. Designed to build on our Academic Foundation, the fund supports staff and physicians as they create and study new and better ways to meet the growing needs of our community.
 
Our second round recipients cover a wide range of programs and services throughout the Hospital. A paediatric surgeon, Dr. Sharifa Himidan, will examine how music affects children psychologically and physiologically as they undergo elective surgery. Geneticist Dr. Wendy Meschino will develop an electronic tool used to assess a patient's eligibility for genetic testing of breast and ovarian cancer. And Dr. Joyce Lee in Acute Care is studying telephone interventions provided to improve patient care and prevent Emergency Department visits...

Laboratory Medicine recognized by Canada Health InfoWay

The Department of Laboratory Medicine has received a Momentum Award by Canada Health InfoWay for its achievement, with a second place standing in the category of Clinical Synoptic Reporting in the ImagineNation Outcomes Challenge. The award was announced by Canada Health InfoWay on May 27, 2013.

Dr. John King receives Outstanding Clinical Teaching Award

Dr. John King,
an Emergency Physician at North York General, has received the Outstanding Clinical Teaching Award for his exemplary work in clinical bedside teaching. The current emergency medicine residents from the University of Toronto's Division of Emergency Medicine nominate and choose the recipient of this prestigious award.

CASTED celebrates 100th course

100% reduction in neonatal Blood Stream Infections

Over the past 12 months, North York General Hospital's (NYGH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has achieved 100% reduction in the rate of neonatal Blood Stream Infections (BSIs). The unprecedented achievement was the result of a provincial quality improvement initiative, Ontario NICU Infection Control (ONIC).

Advanced Practice Nursing Fellowship first of its kind in Ontario

New Education Opportunity for Nurses in Palliative Care

TORONTO, February 7, 2013 – North York General Hospital (NYGH) has launched a new fellowship for nurses interested in learning about the practice of palliative care in home and hospital settings.

The Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) Fellowship is the first of its kind in Ontario. Fellows will spend six months, beginning in July 2013, gaining hands-on experience in the delivery of comprehensive palliative care tailored to the unique needs of every patient and their family. Nurses who have completed the fellowship will have acquired the expertise to provide palliative care to patients, whether it is in hospital or at home.
