Infection prevention and control

Patients and visitors play an important part in reducing the spread of infectious diseases. Here's what you can do to protect you and your family from infection:

  • If you are not feeling well, please do not visit a patient at the hospital.
  • Check with our health care team before you have visitors, especially if you are in isolation.
  • Patients, family members and visitors — remember to wash your hands frequently while you are here. Wash your hands before and after eating, after using the toilet or after blowing your nose. Find out the proper handwashing technique Download: Hand Hygiene Guide brochure.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve.
  • Ask your health care providers to clean their hands, if they have not already done so.
North York General Hospital's Infection Prevention and Control Program helps prevent and control infections. For the safety of everyone, high-risk patients are tested to make sure they do not carry harmful bacteria. All hospital staff members receive infection prevention and control training to protect our patients from diseases.

Falls prevention

What can you do to prevent falls in hospital?
  • Be aware of your limitations.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are uncomfortable, need to go to the bathroom, or cannot reach your belongings.
  • Listen to staff members who will tell you if it is safe to get in and out of bed or off the toilet by yourself.
  • Use your call bell where available, or ask for help before getting up.
  • Do not climb over the bed rails or the end of the bed. Call staff for help.
  • Bring your mobility aids,and non-slip footwear with you to the hospital.
  • Wear flat, supportive shoes with non-skid soles whenever you are walking or getting in and out of a bed or chair.
  • Turn the lights on before getting up, especially at night.

Check for hospital ID badges

  • Look for ID badges — every staff member must wear one. You may request to see the ID badge if it is not visible.
  • Don't let anyone care for you who is not wearing a badge.

Identifying the right patient

  • Staff must identify you before they provide care to you.
  • They must use two methods of identification every time.
  • If your caregivers do not use two methods, please remind them to do so.

Know your medications

  • Ask about the reason for all of your medications.
  • If a pill looks unfamiliar to you, don't take it unless you know what it is.
  • Get written information about your prescriptions, and read it.
  • Make sure you can read your doctor's writing on your prescription.

None of us likes to think that our doctor, nurse, pharmacist or caregiver might make a mistake with our medication, but these mistakes can — and do — happen. Preventing harm from medication incidences is not just a responsibility for health professionals — you can also play a vital role. Fire safety
  • Fire exits are clearly marked throughout the building.
  • During a fire alarm, all elevators return to the main floor and are not operational. All fire doors automatically close until there is an "all clear" announcement on the speaker system.
  • Patients should stay in their room during a fire alarm. Do not move to another place unless a member of the fire department or other hospital staff ask you to move.
  • You may hear one of our regular fire drills (Code Red) during your hospital staff. If you are on your patient care unit when you hear the alarm, please return to your room and keep your door closed. If you are in another area of the hospital, such as the Cafeteria or Gift Shop, please stay where you are until the "all clear" signal is given. A staff member will inform you should any action become necessary.
Ballons/latex products
  • For the protection of patients, staff and visitors who may have a latex sensitivity/allergy, North York General does not permit latex products being brought into the hospital. If you are a patient with a latex sensitivity/allergy, please inform a heatlh care professional at admission. Latex balloons also create a safety risk to children should a piece accidently be inhaled. Foil balloons are acceptable.
